Throttle Privacy Policy
Last updated October 20, 2026
Throttle keeps your data on your iPhone. We have no accounts and no servers that store your data. We don't sell your data, share it for advertising, or track you across apps and websites. Your Apple Health data is never sent to us.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how the Throttle app (the "App") handles personal information, including consumer health data. "Throttle," "we" and "us" mean the owners and developers of the App. It also serves as our Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy under Washington's My Health My Data Act and similar laws in Nevada and Connecticut.
2. Information Stored on Your iPhone
You enter or allow the App to read: your first name (optional); body details (age, sex, height, weight, body-weight goal); food (including supplements such as vitamins and melatonin), water and caffeine logs; workouts, sets and check-ins; training preferences; travel details (home time zone, time zones visited, flight days, upcoming and past trips); and your plan (cut, maintain or bulk phases and their dates, diet breaks and vacation dates). This information is stored only on your iPhone, in the App's private storage, protected by iOS. We cannot see or access it. The first name you enter in Settings → You is used only to show it back to you and is never sent to us. Reminders, such as jet lag pre-shift bedtimes, the wind-down reminder before bed or the one when a vacation ends, are scheduled by iOS on your iPhone. They're optional: iOS asks before the App can send any, and you can turn them off at any time in the App or in your iPhone's Settings; nothing about them is sent to us. If you use Throttle on Apple Watch, your iPhone passes the rest timer and today's water and caffeine goals directly to your watch, where they stay; water and espresso shots added on the watch are saved to Apple Health on your watch.
3. Apple Health (HealthKit)
With your permission, the App reads steps, active energy, heart rate, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, workouts, weight, body composition (body fat, lean body mass, BMI), water, caffeine and nutrition other apps logged (calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sugars, saturated fat, sodium, calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C and D) from Apple Health, and writes the workouts, weigh-ins, water, caffeine and foods you log (workouts with their type, time and length only; foods with their name, time and those nutrients). You can stop food from being written in Settings → Apple Health. We use Apple Health data only to provide the App's features on your iPhone. We do not send it to our servers, sell it, use it for advertising, marketing or data mining, share it with third parties, or store it in iCloud. You can change these permissions at any time in the Health app (Sharing → Apps → Throttle).
4. Location
If you allow it, the App notices large moves (such as landing in a new city) to work out your time zone and jet lag. Your coordinates are sent to Apple's geocoding service to look up the city name and are then discarded; only the city and time zone are kept, on your iPhone. If you open the airport food finder (Throttle Subscription), your position is read once on your iPhone to find the airport you're at; it is not saved or sent anywhere. If you use Food finder (Throttle Subscription), your position is rounded to about 100 meters (three decimal places) on your iPhone and only that rounded point is sent, as described in Section 6(k); your exact position stays on your iPhone, is used only to show distances, and is not saved. You can turn Automatic time zone updates off in Settings → Travel → Smart Trips or deny location access in iOS Settings.
5. Camera and Photos
The camera and any photo you choose are used to scan barcodes, nutrition labels and meals. Scans are processed on your iPhone unless you turn on AI meal scan (Section 6). Photos are not saved by the App, except that when you add foods from a meal photo, the App keeps a small thumbnail of it, a description of how it looks (an image fingerprint made on your iPhone) and the foods and amounts you added, so the same meal is recognized next time without AI. These learned meals stay on your iPhone and in backups you make, are never sent anywhere, and can be deleted in Settings → AI → Learned meals.
6. Information That Leaves Your iPhone
Only these optional features send information, and only what each one needs: (a) Food search and barcode lookup send your search words or the barcode number to USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts. (b) AI meal scan, if you turn it on, sends the meal photo to Anthropic using your own API key, or to Throttle's scan service in versions that offer one; it is used only to name the foods and is not stored by us. When you add your own key, the App checks it with Anthropic once, sending only the key and a one-word test message. (c) Backups go only to the file or folder you choose. (d) Optional downloads and exercise photos are fetched from Apple and GitHub, and the map on the Flights page loads its map images from Apple Maps (it shows the airports you typed; Apple receives the map area, not your trips). (e) If you apply for flight crew pricing, your name, airline, role, and either your work email address or a photo of your crew badge go to Throttle's verification service. A work email is used only to send a one-time code. A badge photo is seen only by the person reviewing it and is deleted as soon as it is approved or declined, and in any case within 48 hours. We keep a record that you were approved (name, airline and date) for up to 13 months to prevent misuse, then delete it. (f) Throttle Subscription purchases are processed by Apple; we receive only Apple's confirmation of your subscription, never your payment details. (g) If you request a feature, the App writes an email in your own Mail app; it is sent only if you tap Send, and we receive what you wrote, your email address and, if you leave it on, the App version and iPhone model. We use it only to consider and reply to your request. (h) If you test a beta through Apple's TestFlight, Apple shares with us crash reports, basic device and usage information about the beta, any feedback you send, and your name and email if you were invited by email, under Apple's TestFlight terms. (i) If you choose to share a scanned nutrition label (off for each label until you turn it on), the product's barcode, name and nutrition values go to Open Food Facts, a non-profit association in France that publishes them in its public database under the Open Database License. They are sent under Throttle's contributor account, not yours, and include nothing about you, your health or what you eat. A label waits on your iPhone until you're online, and turning sharing off in Settings → How we share and collect your data cancels anything not yet sent. Published products can't be withdrawn by us; Open Food Facts can correct or remove them on request. (j) If you have the Throttle Flights add-on, the flight number and takeoff date of a trip flight go to Throttle's flight service when you tap Look up and on the days you fly, which asks the flight data provider AeroDataBox for its times, gates and, while the plane is in the air, the plane's position; the map of the plane loads its map images from Apple Maps. Nothing else is sent: not your name, your trip's city or anything about your health. The service keeps each flight's public times for up to a day so others on the same flight don't need another lookup, and keeps no record of who asked. You can turn this off in Settings → How we share and collect your data. (k) The airport food finder sends only the code of the airport you pick or are at to OpenStreetMap's Overpass API (run by volunteers and the OpenStreetMap Foundation) to list its places to eat; the result is kept on your iPhone for up to a month, and its map images come from Apple Maps. Food finder sends a small area around your position rounded to about 100 meters to the same Overpass API, and at the same time to a public copy of it run by Kumi Systems (whichever answers first is used), to list places to eat there; the result is kept in memory only, until you close the App. These services receive your IP address, as any internet request does, and handle it under their own privacy policies. We do not combine this information with anything else or link it to you.
7. What We Don't Do
We do not sell personal information or consumer health data. We do not share it for targeted advertising. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. The App contains no advertising, analytics or tracking software.
8. Consumer Health Data
Categories: the health, fitness, nutrition, body and sleep data in Sections 2 and 3, and location used for jet lag, to find the airport you're at, and, rounded to about 100 meters, to find food near you (Section 4). Sources: you and Apple Health on your iPhone. Purposes: to provide the App's features you request. Sharing: none, except the transfers in Section 6 that you start (crew verification never includes health data), which go to the service providers named there. A nutrition label you choose to share (Section 6(i)) describes a product, not you: it is sent without your name, account or any link to you, and never says whether or what you ate. We collect consumer health data only with your consent and only as needed for the features you use. We will not use it for any other purpose: not for advertising, marketing, data mining, research or improving the App. Throttle does not conduct health research; if it ever does, it will first get approval from an independent ethics review board and ask for your separate informed consent. A separate, optional consent ("Help improve Throttle") covers only de-identified information about how you use the App, never consumer health data; it is off by default, can be withdrawn at any time in Settings, and Throttle does not collect anything under it today. Before it ever does, the App will show you exactly what would be sent.
9. Your Rights
Depending on where you live (for example California, Washington, other U.S. states, the EU, the UK and Canada), you may have the right to know, access, correct, delete and get a copy of your personal information, to withdraw consent, and to not be treated differently for using these rights. Because your data is stored on your iPhone, you can do all of this yourself: view and edit it in the App, export a copy in Settings → Backup, withdraw consent in Settings → More info, and erase everything in Settings → Delete all my data (or by deleting the App). Apple Health data is managed in the Health app. You may also contact us at the contact email on Throttle's App Store page; we will respond within the time the law requires, and you may appeal any decision by replying to our response.
10. Legal Basis (EU and UK)
We process health data on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give when you grant Apple Health access and use the App, and other information to perform our agreement with you (providing the App). Sharing a nutrition label (Section 6(i)) is based on your consent and contains product information only. You can withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
11. Retention and Deletion
Information stays on your iPhone until you delete it, erase it in Settings, or delete the App. Backups you export remain wherever you saved them until you delete them.
12. Security
Your data is protected by your iPhone's encryption and passcode. API keys you enter are stored in the iOS Keychain on this iPhone only. Information sent over the internet uses encrypted HTTPS connections. If the App crashes, iOS may give it an anonymous technical report (MetricKit); it stays on your iPhone and is shared only if you choose to send it from Settings. If a breach of your health information ever occurred in our systems, we would notify you and the authorities as required by law, including the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule.
13. Children
The App is for adults 18 and older. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
14. Changes
If we change this Policy, we will update the date above. If a change affects how we use consumer health data, we will ask for your consent in the App before it applies.
15. Contact
Questions or requests: the contact email on Throttle's App Store page.
